What counts as an eye emergency?
-
Sudden loss of vision
Vision that suddenly blurs, darkens or disappears in one or both eyes needs same-day assessment.
-
Flashes and new floaters
A sudden shower of floaters, flashing lights or a shadow across your vision can be a sign of retinal detachment.
-
An eye injury
A blow to the eye, a scratch, or something stuck in or under the eyelid.
-
A red, painful eye
Especially with blurred vision, sensitivity to light or after wearing contact lenses.
-
Chemical in the eye
Rinse first with water for at least 15 minutes, then call 000 or go to an emergency department.
What should I do right now?
- 01
Chemical in the eye
Rinse the eye immediately with clean running water for at least 15 minutes, holding the eyelids open. Then call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.
- 02
Something in the eye
Do not rub the eye. Blink and rinse gently with clean water. If something is stuck, cover the eye loosely and call us.
- 03
Blow to the eye
Hold a cold compress gently against the closed eye without pressing on it, and call us for an assessment.
- 04
Contact lens wearer with a red eye
Remove the lens, do not put it back in, keep the lens and case, and call us the same day.
When to call 000
Call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department for a chemical splash after rinsing, a penetrating injury or object stuck in the eye, sudden loss of vision with weakness, facial drooping or speech changes, or an eye injury with a possible head injury.
