Eye care for growing eyes
Children’s eye care at Visura Eye Care in South Yarra checks vision, eye alignment and focusing, so problems that affect learning are found early.
When should a child have their first eye exam?
Children rarely complain about their vision because they assume everyone sees the way they do. A first full eye exam is recommended before starting school, then regularly through the school years, or sooner if you notice squinting, eye turns, headaches or sitting very close to screens.
A children’s eye exam checks clarity of vision, focusing, eye coordination and eye health using games, pictures and letters suited to the child’s age. Medicare covers optometry consultations for eligible children. For children whose short-sightedness (myopia) is increasing, the optometrist can discuss myopia management options that aim to slow its progression.
Who is it for?
- Children starting primary school
- Children who squint, rub their eyes or hold books very close
- Children with an eye turn or a family history of lazy eye
- Short-sighted children whose prescription is increasing
