Retinal care for sharper central vision

Retinal care at Visura Eye Care uses detailed imaging to find and monitor conditions such as macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, with referral for treatment when needed.

What does retinal care involve?

The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye, and the macula at its centre provides sharp central vision. Retinal care means examining and imaging the retina to find changes early, then monitoring them over time.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) produces cross-section images of the retina layers in a few seconds without touching the eye. Combined with retinal photographs, it helps the optometrist detect age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and fluid under the retina. Some retinal conditions need treatment by an ophthalmologist, and we refer promptly when they do.

Who is it for?

  • People with diabetes, who need a retinal check at least every two years
  • Adults over 50, or anyone with a family history of macular degeneration
  • Anyone noticing straight lines looking wavy or a blurred spot in central vision
  • Patients already diagnosed who need regular monitoring

What to expect

  1. 01

    Symptoms and history

We ask about your vision, general health, diabetes and family history.

  2. 02

    Retinal photographs

High-resolution photographs record the retina, optic nerve and blood vessels for comparison over time.

  3. 03

    OCT scan

A quick, painless scan maps the layers of the macula and retina in fine detail.

  4. 04

    Plan and referral

You see the images, hear what they show and leave with a monitoring plan, or a referral if treatment is needed.

How can I look after my retinal health?

Do not smoke, keep blood sugar and blood pressure in the range your doctor advises, and wear sunglasses outdoors. If you have macular changes, check each eye regularly with an Amsler grid and contact us promptly if straight lines start to look wavy or a new blurred patch appears.

Common questions

An OCT scan is a non-invasive imaging test that shows the layers of the retina in cross-section. At Visura Eye Care in South Yarra it takes a few seconds per eye and nothing touches the eye.
